Full Metal Alchemist: Brotherhood

Short Review
Full Metal Alchemist: Brotherhood is a retelling otf the original FMA. Many of the beginning stories are very similar if not identical, however it begins to completely rewrite the story as it goes on.  All of the same characters are present and most have the same personalities. The animation is as good if not better than the original and the storyline is far superior in my opinion. I am a very big fan of the original FMA, and have re-watched it several times. Even though I believe Brotherhood is a better story, I have to show some respect for the original and how groundbreaking it was. This anime is well worth watching for anybody who was a fan of the original, however I suggest that you keep an open mind when watching. Like I said, It starts to become drastically different from the original and some hardcore fans might not take kindly to that. Other than that, please enjoy!

Fullmetal Alchemist

The Full Metal Alchemist is Edward Elrich and his brother Alphonse Elrich are two young teens who have paid the ultimate price for their sins. Alchemy is the science of understanding the composition and structure of something and using energy to deconstruct and reconstruct the elements  into something else.  As children, the Elrich brothers learned that their father was an alchemist after finding one of his alchemy books. They are fascinated by it and teach themselves what they can of alchemy.  One day their mother becomes ill and dies, leave the two of them alone. They find themselves  somebody to teach them proper alchemy and after a while return. They foolishly attempt to bring their mother back to life. In alchemy there are laws. Alchemists are forbidden to transmute lead into gold and even more forbidden is attempting a human transmutation.  During the transmutation Edward loses his right arm and Alphonse loses his entire body, but in desperation Edward uses his left leg as a catalyst to bind Al’s soul to a suit of armor. Al manages to carry Ed to their family friend’s, the Rockbells, house. The Rockbells are automail mechanics. Automail is a type of mechanical prosthetics. The Rockbells fit Ed with their best automail where his arm and leg once were. After he is better they head to Central, the capital city, where Ed takes the exam to become a state alchemist. Their goal is to use the information available to state alchemists to create a philosopher’s, an alchemic amplifier that is said to be able to allow the user to do alchemy without an equivalent exchange. The brothers want to use it to return their bodies to normal. The brother travel many places and go through hell in order to achieve their goal. I LOVED this anime and would recommend this to anybody! It has exceptional character development and great animation. It has tones of adventure, fantasy, magic, science, romance, drama, and many more genres.  I hope you all enjoy this as much I did!

Darker Than Black: Ryuusei No Gemini

This going to be a short review.

The second season of Darker Than Black takes place a while after the first season ends. It starts with a young girl whose father is an organization scientist who developed the technology to erase memories. Her brother is a very powerful contractor, however his remuneration is also very severe. The young girl becomes a false contractor after meeting Hei. Hei has changed to the point that he no longer resembles his old self. He is an alcoholic and doesn't eat. He is also out to kill Yin who he once realized he had fallen in love with. I was not a fan of the second season even at first, however after watching the OVA's it made a lot more sense. I would recommend this only after watching the first season AND the OVA's. Other than that it is very similar to the first season, Enjoy!

Darker Than Black

Darker Than Black is the story of those with supernatural abilities called contractors. An event happens that creates two spot on Earth that are called Heave's Gate(South America) and Hell's Gate(Tokyo), where strange occurrences happen. Anybody that trespasses into the area is never heard from again. At that same time the sky was replaced by a sky full of false stars, which represent the life of a contractor. Contractors are those who have abilities develop which range from controlling gravity to materializing items and even controlling weather. Contractors can use their abilities but must pay a remuneration (a payment of sorts) that is usually strange. Some have to break their own fingers, drink beer, eat cigarettes, etc. They have also lost all emotional reasoning which is replaced by pure logical reasoning. As a result, many contractors work as assassins and the like. This story revolves around a chinese contracor named Hei. Hei is slightly different since he does not have a remuneration for his abilities. Hei works with a girl named Yin that is a "Doll." Dolls have zero personality and act as support for contractors. Each doll has an affinity for an element or substance, that when they are in contact can project themselves to any other place that substance might be. Hei also works with another contractor named Mao that had the ability to  transfer his consciousness into animals. But at a period in the past an incident occurred and he lost his real body. He now prefers the body of a black cat. Their team also has a human contact who was once a police officer by the name of Huang.  Huang is the contact for the organization they work for and hands down missions for Hei to complete. Over the coares of the series it becomes obvious that Hei is not a normal contractor, most obviously because he has no remuneration. But also because he does not always follow logic and at times he is very driven by emotion. I would recommend this to those who prefer supernatural abilities. This series gives a different kind of feel and variety to the genre. It does its best to show as much character development as possible while still leaving a sense of mystery. Making you want more and more. There is also a second season to this along with some OAV's to fill in between the first and second season. I will be writing a review of the second season next. Enjoy!

Hunter x Hunter

Hunter x Hunter(just called Hunter Hunter) is an anime from the late '90s that is currently being remade. The main character is Gon Freecs, a boy with superhuman reflexes and strength. It is his goal to become a Hunter like his father, who was known as the worlds greatest hunter. Hunters are people who must complete an exam of all kinds of challenges to prove themselves capable of the tasks that they might need to complete. The exams focus on physical condition, mental ability, and general reasoning, along with quite a few other things mixed in to help weed out those who shouldn't become Hunters. Hunters are issued a license which basically gives them free reign to do as they please. On his way to the exams he meets a couple other people who are also wanting to become hunters. To be exact he first comes across Leorio and Kurapica, they help each other on the way to the exams. Leorio has a dream to become a doctor but cant afford the tuition costs, so he decided to become a hunter because the tuition is waived. Kurapica wishes to become a hunter to avenge his people who had been wiped out in a genocide for the simple fact of their crimson eyes. Eyes that when in battle turn from their normal color to a bright crimson. Once at the exams they come across a kid the same age as Gon, who is at the minimum age of 12 for becoming a hunter, by the name of Killua. Killua is an odd kid that Gon instantly takes a liking to. Killua has sort of the same reaction to Gon but was brought up far differently and never had any friends, so is unsure of why he likes Gon except that he doesn't feel bored around him. Killua is the heir to a family of assasins known throughout the world as the most feared. He decided to take the hunter exam out of boredom and later it is revealed that he also felt that he wanted to become his own person and not be just like everybody else in his family. All four of them team up and help each other, and later go through many trials and tribulations to do what they came to do. I really enjoyed this anime. Although it received a lot of criticism for being a Son Goku(Dragonball) knock off, it was well done and even though some of the aspects are very similar it has its own life. Some of the characters were cliche but it is hard to find an anime that doesn't have some characters that are there for a comic relief or as filler material. I recommend this to those that enjoy adventure, superhuman, fighting or logical thought process type anime. If you were a Dragonball fan I suggest watching this anime, but judge it for itself and not try to compare the two. Enjoy!

Kenichi: The Mightiest Disciple

Kenichi Shirhama is a weak knees pervert who is always being bullied. One day on his way to school he meets a big breasted blonde named Miu Furinji. She sees a yin-yang pin on his collar and assumes he is a martial artist. She appears to be a dimwitted, naive, girl in glasses, however she performs maneuvers that are inhuman. Later that day on the way home Kenichi comes across a group of thugs bullying an old man, so he decides to hide. Miu shows up and stands between the thugs and the old man. Kenichi sees this and out of principle he jumps between them. As a result Miu is impressed (even though she is the one who basically cripples the thugs) and tells him about  place where he can learn martial arts, with the warning that it is only if he can survive the training! When he gets there, he is scared out of his mind but is set on learning. He then undergoes rigorous training by various masters of different martial arts including Karate, Chinese kung fu, muy thai, weapons specialist, and more. One of the key character attributes of Kenichi is that he has no courage, however he never backs down when the ones he cares about are on the line or his courage is in question. And as a result, he is willing to undergo the torturous training of his masters. I find this anime very inspirational and even slightly educational. It does a very adequate job of explaining  some of the concepts behind various forms of martials arts. It may seem a bit childish and immature at times, but I didn't mind. The anime is worth the bad points. I would recommend this to anybody who enjoys the fighting, martial arts, superhuman, or similar genres. Enjoy!

Rurouni Kenshin

Rurouni Kenshin is the stroy of Kenshin Himura, the Batousai. A wandering swordsman who has made a vow to never kill again. He does this to attempt to repent for all the lives he took as the legendary manslayer known as Batousai. Kenshin helps out a female dojo master by the name of Kaoru and ends up staying there. He meets a young boy with aspirations of being a samurai named Yahiko, and a thug muscle for hire named Sanosuke. Together they fight to protect each other and their ideals. Along the way Kenshin has to deal with his past as a manslayer and attempt to surpass his past self without killing. This is one of my all time favorite anime. I would recommend this to anyone, it has elements of many genres from action, adventure, love, history, comedy, etc. It also has many OVA's which are both prequels and sequels to the anime series.
